How Air Miles Are Calculated Between Two Points
Calculating the distance between two airports is not as simple as measuring a straight line on a paper map. Because the Earth is a sphere (technically an oblate spheroid), the shortest path between any two points is a curved arc called a Great Circle. The Haversine Formula Explained
For the mathematically curious, here is how the Haversine formula actually works to calculate air mileage between airports:
